why we should all turn vegetarian [message #223737] Mi, 12 Juli 2006 18:37

The right to life is possible only in a certain, different atmosphere that
is not present on the earth at the moment. Animals are killed, birds are
killed, sea animals are killed, just for game. You don't have any reverence
for life. And life is the same whether it is in human beings or in other
forms. Unless man becomes aware of his violence towards animals, birds, he
cannot be really alert about his own right to life. If you are not caring
about others' lives, what right have you got to demand the same right for
yourself?

But the whole of humanity is non-vegetarian; they are all eating other life
forms. There is no reverence for life as such. Unless we create an
atmosphere of reverence for life, man cannot realize the goal of getting his
fundamental right of life.

When you eat meat you are not only taking food, you are allowing a
certain
animal from which the meat has come to enter in you. The meat was part
of a particular body, the meat was part of a particular instinct pattern.
The
meat was the animal just a few hours before, and that meat carries all
the impressions of the animal, all the habits of the animal. When you are
eating meat your many attitudes will be affected by it.

Non-vegetarian food is one of the basic causes of the whole society
being
almost in a continuous fight. It makes you insensitive, it makes you
hard,
it makes you a stone. And it creates things in you - anger, violence -
which
can be easily avoided.

You're right. People can live on vegatables and fruits and nuts and
food grown from soil. We don't need to eat meat. I support your view.
I eat very little meat myself.

For me it is hard not to see a lot of virtue in those cultures which
uphold the universal reference for life.

It is hard to see how we could feel sad when the people who are close
to us die and not feel the same way when innocent animals are killed.

We all live only once.

And consider the insight quoted in dd's post:

> > > Body Dharma - on health
> > >
> > > Eating a dead animal's flesh we are absorbing the emotions it
> > > felt as it was killed. The chemistry of emotions -
> > > neurotransmitter substances - are identical in man and beast.

Although we don't know the quantitative aspect of it, the qualitative
part certainly has a material basis, and therefore makes sense.

Precisely because we only live once, the issue of killing, whether
concerning other animals or ourselves, should be of great concern for
us.

The Hindu culture appeals to me a great deal, partly because of the
respect Indian people have for the lives of many kinds of animals.

For reasons I would not go into here, the Hindu culture has a great
deal more awareness of the universality of our existence than, say,
the Chinese culture. The National Geographic image showing an old
Chinese woman squinting at a number of incense sticks she held with
both of her hands before her eyes in a haze of smoke is indelible and
telling. The number of sticks probably signifies the number of
relatives she would want her God or Gods to have mercy on. And in
some way and probably with validity, her God or Gods are probably,
consciously or unconsciously, her ancestors.

It is natural for her to feel that she needs to reach out for help
which she couldn't find elsewhere, among humans. Life is bleak for
most people, except the extreme minority of the elites, you know.

It is naturally therefore for her to reach out for the spirits of her
ancestors because afterall, she wouldn't know who else to turn to.

And it is naturally to only remember her loved ones because of the
investments loved ones have had for one another. (The psychologists
called it the ID extension.)

But perhaps, if there is any transcendental power, the notion of
universality may become significant. In other words, how can we
expect mercy if we ourselves aren't merciful. How can we expect love
from others if we don't take the initiative to love others. And how
can we be sure that an animal has no transcendental presence but only
we human do?

The Hindu culture seems to encompass a perspective of the universe as
extended back for billions of years and as extended out for all living
creatures.

Its sages seems to be able to incorporate our contemporary knowledge
of the animal body into their timeless wisdom of universality, parity,
and reciprocity. And that wisdom seems ripe for all human beings to
pick for their own benefits, including the large Chinese population.

The animal body science teaches us today hardly differentiates a
human's from that of a monkey.

I used to think that I can't survive without meat. I no longer think
that. It can take a while to get used to it.

It is mostly the de-sensitization of our feelings stemming from eating
killed animals which prevents us from feeling the the devastation of
wars, such as those in the ME.

How can we be so quick to invoke military option in the name of solving
problems otherwise?

For good reasons Re: why we should all turn vegetarian [message #224167 ] Do, 13 Juli 2006 08:57

For me it is hard not to see a lot of virtue in those cultures which
espouse the universal reverence for life.

> > >

For reasons I would not go into here, the Hindu culture has a great
deal more awareness of the universality of our existence than, say,
the Confucian feudal culture. The National Geographic image showing
an old Chinese woman squinting at a number of incense sticks she held
with both of her hands before her eyes in a haze of smoke is indelible
and telling.

It is natural therefore for her to reach out for the spirits of her
ancestors because afterall, she wouldn't know who else to turn to.

And it is natural to only remember her loved ones because of the
investments loved ones have had in for one another. (The
psychologists called it the ID extension.)

But perhaps, if there is any transcendental power, the notion of
universality may become significant. In other words, how can we
expect mercy if we ourselves aren't merciful? How can we expect love
from others if we don't take the initiative to love others? And how
can we be sure that an animal has no transcendental presence but only
we human do?

The Hindu culture seems to encompass a perspective of the universe as
extended back for billions of years and as extended out for all living
creatures.

Its sages seem to be able to incorporate our contemporary knowledge
of the animal body into their timeless wisdom of universality, parity,
and reciprocity. And that wisdom seems ripe for all human beings to
pick for their own benefit, including the large Chinese population.

How can we be so quick to invoke the military option in the name of
solving problems otherwise?

I did respect freedom of religion but I totally disagree with your
vegetarian or anti-meat eating claim. Base on scientific prove, human
is no an vegetarian creature.

1) Children can not grow without eating meat. (unless they can consume
a few hundred kilograms of vegetable a day to get enough nutrien for
growth, which can be achieved by a few pieces of meat)

2) Adult can not survive healthly more than 5 years without acquire
enough vitamin B12 which only available from meat. (scientist have not

found a way to produce B12 using non-animal source)

3) Elderly people (especially woman) may difficulty to control her high

cholestro problem by not eating enough fish.

Of course, over eating meat is not good for health. But that does not
mean we should not take meat at all. A well BALANCE eating habit is
good/healthy lifestyle for everyone.
(A healthy meal should consist of Rice/bread/potato (50%), vegetable
(25%), meat/fish/chicken (25%) and fruit for after meal.)

Please take note: Eating Bak Kut Teh (Malaysian Pork and bone herbal
soup with Chinese Tea) or New York T-bone steak twice a week is not a
healthy lifestyle.

I am not a dietitian but my wife certainly is a US certified/registered

dietitian. That was what she always remind me.

I haven't had rice/bread/potato for years and I'm still alive.

Rice/bread/potato is just some example. The actual scentific
classification should be carbohydrate.

Rice/bread/potato are just a few example of carbohydrate. Human can
survive without carbohydrate; just like Eskimo, their
animal/meat/fish/fat is their main diet.

Anywhere, no human being can survive without eating meat/fish in long
run (more than 5 years), as the body run out of stored vitamin, fatty
acid, trace mineral which only source is animal meat. Of course, human
won't die immediately after 5 years of total non-meat diet but the
vital organ start deteriorate. Thus, decide for yourself if you want
to be any vegetarian. But the hard fact for a vegetarian diet are
Unhealthy and unsustainable.

Here are some additional fact:

Most of the longetivity people is living in Japan with heavy fish
diet/consumption. and most of the shortest life span human is living
in India with vegetarian diet.
