Dell fires the first salvo ....

The PC world war is now on. Others, undoubtedly, will be forced
to respond. It is a race to the bottom. From which, there can be
no survivor.

Have you used a Dell and found it superior to other brands?

no need to be so pessimistic !!!
high-tech industries is very profitable.
against the inflation this 30 years since 197X,
the computer-price dropped very drastically,
they are still in good proft for competition.
when the knowledge is wide-spread, the most efficient ones are to subsist
at stable price, just as other high-tech industries !!!!
PC is noticeable, just because the market is too big,
likely to be bigger than mobile phone, although not in quanity, but in
sales volume !!!

PC is the textile industry of the post modern world. Dell
should have followed IBM's example.

Now, it's Vietnam vs China .... :)

Right to the point.

Dell is minimizing RnD spendings and that will give them lesser unfair
advantage over newer market segments such as ubiquitas applications and
consumers whereas fusing of PC is progressing.

However, the true strength of Dell lies not in their direct sales but
gov/corporate biz.

USA is just the fisherman .... :)

Vietnam and Philipine are the Pearl and Yangtze river deltas
of the PRC ten years ago. Both, are young and very hungry.
Intel is building a 700 million plant in Vietnam and outsource
back offices and call centers are poping up all over Philipine.

With rising FDI, they are ready, willing and able ....

Your friend selling Toshiba brand ? Just joking.

Dell also prides themself for better thermal design with gamer models.
This quality is one parameter you cannot find from the spec sheet.
Just like cars with overheat problem. Google "overheat notebook
(brandname) " then you can get some clue.

Thermal / power design to overcome physical constraints with notebooks
will be a real challenge with applications such as digital terrestrial
broadcast and IPTV that "fanless" comes as a must. Notebook or flat
panel display, no escape.

Before marketable technology is introduced, guess makers will keep
telling us, "notebook is not for 24 hrs usage".

I suppose the solution for the time being is to use a piece of metal
sheet as support for the hot pc, and then a metal table below it to
absorb more heat. The metal table is better with holes on its face.

Or a USB cooling stand, for the time being.....

I presume your fisherman comes from chinese proverb !
if so, you ignore the environment is not that of before WWII.
as fisherman, the (鷸)snipe and (蚌)clam must be in fighting,
but now, USA is eminent at the above, all are aiming at her.
her balance effort can only be providing food to robbers as feeding a tiger
to bite her !!!!

Raising dragons and tigers .... :)

Is a tricky business. The USA has tamed the erstwhile wild,
wild world. Henceforth, world wars will be fought at a more
civilized level: economics and ideologies. Surely, there are
war rhethorics, such as the "war on terror" or "war of civili-
zations". The gentleman from Texas is an exception.

Most, would not call them wars ....

I googled "overheat computer dell" and got 399,000 hits; "... sony"
and got 422,000 hits; "... compaq" 153,000 hits; "... gateway"
219,000 hits; "... apple" 572,000 hits, "... Toshiba" 260,000 hits,
etc. These numbers seem to correspond with the market share/
popularity. Could you substantiate your claim that Dell is
superior in this regard?

I would expect heat pipe technology to become more prevalent.

I kept my VAIO plugged in 24/7 without any ill effect; but of course
it turns into standby mode every so often.

Your comment about consumer poll data mirroring market share is right
on the money. In this time and day PCs are a commodity and there is
little to choose between different sources other than cosmetic looks
and marketing a brand name vs no name. They all use interchangeable
parts and any part that produce even a little trouble more often than
another generic supplier's part gets tossed out promptly by the
vendor. Buy a computer from any mass marketeer and you'll do fine.

If the hit numbers truely correspond to market share then you have no
argument here.....but are they ? Should "destop replacement
notebook"
be taken out from the data ? I guess so. Model by model
comparison
is the fair one.

The "clue" I put there is to demonstrate this overheat issue is not
limited
to specific brand and significant concerns regarding the "heat" only
after
purchase.

> I would expect heat pipe technology to become more prevalent.

Borrow high efficiency thermal conduction know-how from air
conditioner....
The ambient temperature will go as high as 120+ celcius inside
notebooks.
There are many water cooling models in the market but how's start with
components with lesser thermal resistance and lower amper dies in the
first place ?

Your VAIO can take five by itself. You can take a beer to cool down
too.
Same to the "overheat" situation with Isreal, N.Korea .....

Two friends of mine who have used Dell told me so but then again I
personally have not used a Dell. Do you want to dispell the findings
or observation of my friends? At the same time, I am not sure if the
hits in Google are demonstrative of any definitive conclusion about
overheating notebook computer.
