L'annee du Coq: Chinois et Rebelles (The Year of the Cock: Chinese
and Rebels)
by Guy Sorman

....

Sorman claimed that, while the Communist Party's real ambition
remains to be unveiled, for now the party is dedicated to building
military and diplomatic muscle, to which economic development is
subjected.

....

"Nobody says Italy is threatening to the world. The real threat that is
coming from China is neither the economy nor its people. The real
threat to us is the nature of the Communist Party," he said.

Sorman claimed that, while the Communist Party's real ambition
remains to be unveiled, for now the party is dedicated to building
military and diplomatic muscle, to which economic development is
subjected.

While ordinary Chinese readers and the authorities seem to consider his
book an accusation, he did not aim at provocation, Sorman said.

"It's just a record of the way the reality in China is like a
photograph. The purpose was to find a new, balanced viewpoint, not of
the China we know from the propaganda spread by the Communist Party,"
he said.

....

Besides, a year in rural villages in China made him realize that it is
not only material destitution that the Chinese people are suffering
from.

"I would say it's spiritual, psychological destitution that looms
really large," he said. "It is because peasants, who make up 70 percent
of the total population, do not have any hope for a better tomorrow."
