Not all economists in the world are saying "china's economy is so
good.", among the nay sayers include the late greater American thinker,
Mr. Peter Drucker, Wall Street heavy weight Morgan Stanley's chief
economist Stephen Roach, and his colleague, Morgan Stanley's Asia chief
economist, Andy Xie are the two more visible "China Bears", George
Sorros is yet another famous "China Bear".
In the earlier stage of China's economic "reform" during the 1980's,
China's economic growth maintained close correlation with the growth
rate of average income, especially with China's rural income. Since
1989, after the June-4 Tiananmen massacre, China's economic growth
number and the growth rate of average income has gone their separate
ways. This can be called yet another mystery with Chinese
characteristics.
Personally, I believe that most economist are taking China's official
economic data verbatim in their studies, since it is a safe and
convenient (but lazy) way for themselves. And if you watch the main
English language media, bad news of China's economic is rarely reported.
While you can often hear how many new branch stores Wal-mart has opened
or plan to open in China, you do not see or hear that even in Beijing's
most prosperous district, Wal-Mart's parking garage remain empty most of
the time. Thus, Chinese government has successfully silenced main-stream
media.
In a way, in order to attract more foreign investment into China, while
maintain CCP's tyranny, Chinese government has successfully created an
image of China's economic "miracle", No matter how clever was that
illusion, what China get today, is a glamorous illusion. Many of It's
people, especially CCP cadres are rotten to the core, By commercializing
public education and public health system, it literally pitted Chinese
against Chinese, allowed the strong of the society (with power or money)
to exploit the weak without any compunction or fear of punishment. This
kind the of society is a mob society in the making.
If China had an effective free press and started honest political
reform, at the beginning of the economical reform - with more risk, off
course - China's corruptions would not be so wide-spread like what is
today. While foreign investment was pooling into China, China's
officials started their game of uncontrolled exuberance and spending
spree, by borrowing from state owned banks.
Economy, just like anything in nature, runs in cycles; very much like
the wax and wane of the moon or the rise and fall of the ocean tide.
However, the CCP brain-washed cadres never believed in the force of
nature, they do not believe that human should be living in harmony with
nature.
What they believe is that nature can be conquered, and the end justified
by means; they try so hard to make themselves to believe that China's
fast growth rate can continue for another 20, 30 or even 50+ years.
Unfortunately, common sense tells us, every party has to come to an end,
China's officials had spent or wasted so much money that China cannot
afford in the past 25 years, now the foreign investment for new
factories has came to an abrupt halt, Chinese exports are competing
against Chinese exports in the same markets, and the inferior quality
and foul reputation of many Chinese goods in the international markets
have made many self-respecting consumers shy away from goods made in
China. Yet, worst of all, foreign trade occupies such an unnaturally
large portion of the Chinese economy, with the rising of energy cost in
the international market, China is suddenly faced with sudden and fast
increase of costs! Yet, Chinese government has desperate need to
maintain the "world's fastest growth rate", This is one of the main
reason, that Chinese government is unable to cap or cool down the
speculative housing bubble. This along could very well be the triggering
factor of CCP's demise.
A recent article regarding Hu Jintao's visit to China's most glamorous
showcase city Shanghai contains interesting revelations:
While Shanghai's party chief Chen Liangyu was telling Hu, that 50% of
Shanghai's employed enjoyed annual income of 50,000 to 58,000 RMB, Hu
questioned the accuracy of this figure, by quoting the number obtained
by central government: 80% of Shanghai's employed has annual income
below 20,000 RMB!
What is the true state of China's economy? I believe that Mr Hu enjoys a
better vantage point.
If Mr Hu's numbers are closer to the truth, than another question rises,
whats the real population of China's "middle class" ? ;-) ;-)
