Normally I am not excited about PC developments as there are no
compelling products that I would spend money on. The only new PC
product I had purchased in recent years is flash memory sticks and
drives. I love them because I can maintain my important files in an
identifiable block that is not on my PC hard drive. Its a lot easier
to remember where I put them. Such files can be kept confidential,
safe from inadvertent deletion, is portable and can be accessible very
quickly.
The most recent new electronic device that created a new and very
profitable market is flat panel displays, the large sized one being a
natural outcome of better manufacturing technologies. Chinese
manufacturers are playing catch up in this market.
Its unusual for the Chinese government to be involved in product
development. In flash memory I believe the government has identified
a very important mass consumer product. Like the microprocessor it
will be in every electronic device inlcuding you kitchen toaster and
you kid's toys.

The Chinese government has worked out an ambitious plan to make China
one of the world's largest manufacturer and exporter of flash products
within a period of five to 10 years.
The General Office of the State Council recently issued the "Comments
on the Promotion of the Development of Our Country's Flash Industry",
a brain work of 10 central government departments.
The flash industry manufactures "creative" products including all
kinds of printing, visual and audial flash products as well as
flash-related costume, toy and game, says the 28-clause "Comments".
The government plans to set up a special fund for supporting the
industry, while local governments will also allocate special funds for
the purpose.
In addition, the government will support flash companies with
favorable policies in fund-raising, listing and tax. The government
will also set up state-level flash industry parks, train specialists,
and invite experts from overseas.
Exports of flash products will enjoy government subsidies and loans as
well as tax refunding.
Flash companies are encouraged to establish their own associations of
different kinds who will be able to help the government stipulate
industrial standards and a rating policy.
According to the document, a joint meeting has been set up, with its
headquarters based in the Ministry of Culture. Officials from nine
other ministerial departments have taken part in the joint meeting.
The others include the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance,
Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Information Industry,
Ministry of Commerce, State Administration of Taxation, State
Administration of Industry and Commerce, State Administration of
Radio, Television and Film, and State Administration of Press and
Publication.
